Dear Trick or Treat Author,

I am thrilled to participate in Trick or Treat this year. Halloween is my favorite holiday, and fall my favorite season, so Trick or Treat feels like an awesome mix of things I love combined with fandoms I adore. Good times.

I can't wait to read your story or see your art. I've provided a little bit of information about things I do and do not want, along with a few thoughts about why I like particular fandoms and characters, but mostly I want you to have fun creating. Don't let any prompts or thoughts below stress you out. I love both fic and art. Feel free to mix and match tricks and treats, within a fandom or across fandoms.

My absolute favorite things: werewolves, crossovers, monsters and magic.

You can find me on DW, LJ, and AO3 as escritoireazul.

So short_takes is gearing up for a new challenge and as we were discussing themes, I mentioned one I'd like to see is alternate universes, such as apocalypses or werewolves or vampire hunting or teen rock stars or whatever. Which inspired me.

As soon as I get back from a meeting, I'm spending the weekend writing (I have deadlines coming up) and cleaning, so tot ake a break with something that is just fun, nothing else, if you want to give me a prompt for a fandom I've written (see tag list for fandoms) and an alternate universe for that world, I'll throw together a drabble or a ficlet or something.

BSC fic will probably get written first, since that's what inspired this.

I really, really love the Simpsons episode "That 90s Show" with the grunge and all the 90s things and all the references to the future to come. It makes me happy every time I see it.

Seriously? SERIOUSLY?

The Summer Before by Ann M. Martin
Hardcover: 224 pages
Publisher: Scholastic Inc. (April 1, 2010)
ISBN-10: 0545160936
ISBN-13: 978-0545160933

Before there was the Baby-Sitters Club, there were four girls named Kristy Thomas, Mary Anne Spier, Claudia Kishi, and Stacey McGill. As they start the summer before seventh grade (also before they start the BSC), each of them is on the cusp of a big change. Kristy is still hung up on hoping that her father will return to her family. Mary Anne has to prove to her father that she's no longer a little girl who needs hundreds of rules. Claudia is navigating her first major crush on a boy. And Stacey is leaving her entire New York City life behind...

...in order to find new friends in Stoneybrook, Connecticut.

The Summer Before . . . is a sweet, moving novel about four girls on the edge of something big - not just the Club that will change their lives, but also all the joys and tribulations of being twelve and thirteen.

YOU GUYS. I don't even know what to say about this! I'm sure there will be very little new in it and I'd rather read a book about them in high school but I don't care. A new BSC book. Awesome, y/y?
escritoireazul: (cleopatra 2525 under cover)
I'm reading about a stuffed pig (let's not discuss why, okay?), and the only thing I can think about, as this description of it goes on and on, is Stacey, from The Baby-Sitters Club and her stuffed pig collection. Then I start thinking about Buffy and Mr. Gordo.

Then I want to write a crossover story. Maybe where Stacey is a newly powered baby Slayer and she and Buffy have this bonding moment over stuffed pigs. Lately I've been wanting to write a huge crossover world where there are lots of baby Slayers coming together from all different fandoms, and I realize I pretty much did the outline of this in "Ten Slayers Who Never Were (The Of All the Women in all the World Mix)", but still.

I don't have time to write an epic crossover with baby Slayers, and fighting monsters, and lots of sex, but oh, I really want to write it.

Now back to reading about stuffed pigs. Because that is so much more fun than writing epic stories.

It's the Dawn round at [livejournal.com profile] short_takes! Sign Up Here! Come write Dawn fic with me (for me, whatever). I love Dawn, and there's so much potential with her.

And though I've enjoyed the last few rounds, dear god I hope I end up writing her with a character who isn't Mallory. I like Mallory well enough, but I have no idea where these Mallory stories are coming from.

---

Damn it! There's a local clinic starting up some research on bipolar, and yet I won't be here long enough to do it.

Hey, the sign-ups are open at [livejournal.com profile] short_takes for the Abby round. I know Abby doesn't get a lot of love from BSC fandom, but I think she's awesome. Come on, she loves Elvis, of course I think she's fab. You should come write some BSC girl slash with me!
escritoireazul: (cleopatra 2525 angry love)
[livejournal.com profile] short_takes is taking sign-ups for the Kristy round here. So if you write BSC girl slash, or have always wanted to write it, now is the time to sign-up.

I'm not a huge fan of Kristy, so I'm still debating on whether I will do it. I'm currently writing Stacey/Dawn, and it might be nice to try new characters - then again, it might be nice to write something else, instead.

I saw The Happening this evening.

I am writing fic! I haven't written anything in ages, except for this Myrtle story I started awhile back and haven't finished. I think I might finish the current fic this weekend, even. I'd like to hit the library to read some BSC books, if they have any, since my collection isn't here, but I'm sure I can write without the source material if I must. I've certainly read enough of it over the years.

Anyway, BSC girl slash to come soon. I am thrilled with it so far. It's quiet, and sweet, which is just what I wanted to write.
escritoireazul: (breed animal inside)
I have insomnia.

I also have thinky thoughts about The Baby-Sitters Club and why a fandom based on a book series about eight girls (plus two associate members, only one of whom is a male) has so much more boy slash than girl slash. I think this says something about the way fans treat women, but I'm not quite sure yet which words I want to use.

But seriously. Most of the slash fic I see is one of the triplets and Jeff (or Nicky and Jeff). The series is about eight female baby-sitters (nine if you count Shannon, who wasn't the focus of very many stories, but was still a member from early on), and yet the fanfic focuses on the male charges.

I wonder if it has something to do with the age of the people writing fic now? Where they closer to the charges' ages when reading it, and therefore were more interested in them? That might be part of it, but it doesn't make a lot of sense.

Why so much boy slash instead of girl slash in that fandom? My inquiring mind wants to know.

I am currently watching Lilo & Stitch and working on that Lilo and Stitch/Buffy the Vampire Slayer Nani/Buffy WIP. I want to stay up writing it, but I really need to get to bed soon. I have a ton of things to do before the Superbowl party tomorrow night, and a two hour meeting in the middle of the afternoon.

In addition to the Nani/Buffy story, I've worked on the following stories this weekend:

1) A story about the Slayer featured in season eight's "The Chain", set early in her story.
2) Another story about that Slayer set after "The Chain".
3) A Baby-Sitters Club story about Dawn saying good-bye to her friends when she returns to California permanently.
4) A Lost Boys story about Maria and all the things lurking in the darkness.

I suddenly want to write a story about thirteen-year-old Nani meeting thirteen-year-old Abby when the BSC goes to Hawaii. Lilo could be a baby and their parents could still be alive and wouldn't Nani and Abby be adorable? And baby Lilo? (No Stitch is sad, but, still.)

I think I need to add more Elvis to the Nani/Buffy story. There's never enough Elvis.

One of my favorite lines from this movie:

Lilo: I'm sorry I bit you, and pulled your hair, and punched you in the face.

Oh, Lilo.

And now I want to write about Lilo and Myrtle when they're teenagers and obviously bickering because they are in love.

(Also, why are they letting the little white girl boss them around? Seriously?)

Oh, yay, more Elvis music. This makes me happy.
escritoireazul: (dirty dancing love)
I am running on approximately one hour of sleep (you know, it is amazing how often this happens since I've gone back to school. I certainly had no idea I could do so much on so little sleep. The other day, for example, I ended up staying up most of the night to edit this large paper with a friend of mine. Once it was done and packed to be sent off to the competition, there were only a couple hours until my flight left, and I ended up not being able to sleep, so I flew to another state, had an interview, and then drove four hours, all on the one hour of sleep I was able to get on the plane. Then I stayed up and was social for awhile, from dinner to hanging out to playing Rock Band), but it's okay, because this has turned into an incredibly fannish afternoon.

First, I put on Dirty Dancing while I made dinner (I have a night class, so dinner is kind of early these days) and I have this fanfic thought. Actually, two of them, one hot porny fun (this will likely never be written) and the other a deliciously angsty character study (this might get written).

Then I finally picked up and opened a package that has been down in the office for days now, and it contains The Long Way Home, that first season seven Buffy graphic novel and The Time Quartet by Madeleine L'Engle (of which I've only read A Wrinkle In Time, can you believe it?).

I've already read the graphic novel (since I opened the box, I mean) and I have a fic idea. Actually, two, one a deliciously angsty character study and the other hot porny fun (erm, are you seeing a trend with my ideas today?). I might actually have a third idea, too, now that I think about it.

I've been dying to start this BSC fic, though, a five things fic based around Dawn. It was originally going to be porny fun (as well as some delicious angst) but then I remembered they were, you know, thirteen, and not actually eighteen or older like they acted, so it will now just be sweet and deliciously angsty. (I hope.) (If I ever get to write it.)

I'm not doing much this weekend (though I need to get in touch with C. and see if she wants to get together this weekend, since I'll be in town and [I hope] not sick), so maybe I'll have time to write.
escritoireazul: (ginger snaps little red wolf)
This morning I woke up to a dream where I was mourning the loss of someone important in my life and ended up talking to Remus Lupin about it, which led to watching the Perseid meteor shower (which is supposed to be quite a show this year), which led to some really hot frottage. (It's quite possible I was Tonks in this dream, and we were both mourning Sirius.) And yet, in the middle of the dream, I'm thinking, "No, don't do this, you're not Sirius!" so maybe I do finally have an OTP. (Except not, because I'm pretty fond of the idea of Tonks/Lupin, if not always the execution.) Anyway, yes, that was a fun dream, except for the whole being in mourning at the beginning and the fact that my alarm woke me at the end when, somehow, Sirius walked in. Damn alarm.

So then I went to work my last Saturday shift, and then came home and packed for hours. Yeah, I leave here a week from yesterday. I am not yet ready, though I am making good progress. I have two more days of work, two stories to finish and post, and packing to do before my going away party Wednesday night. Thursday morning is already scheduled as hangover morning. The theme of my party is Make Carla Your Favorite Alcoholic Drink.

(If any of you will be in the area and want to attend, let me know and I'll send you an email with details.)

Friday night I plan to spend in a hotel, and Tuesday through Friday of the next week the school is putting me up in a hotel during early orientation, so I might have some internet access, but I don't know how much. Then I'll be in the new apartment, and I likely won't have any there for awhile. Plus I think I'll be quite busy with school, it being a program different from anything I've done and a good school, on top of that, so I'll be scarce here. I'll likely read more than I comment or post, but I will read when I can, and I'll miss you guys tons.

(Since there's all this movement, I'll repeat I'm escritoireazul at greatestjournal and insanejournal, and will be at journalfen if that's where everyone goes and I find someone to hook me up with an account. I've been trying to add people at those places as they've posted their names, but my internet time is dropping soon, as I've said.)

While thinking about The Baby-Sitters Club books, I was struck with this thought. It's always such a big deal that Mary Anne has two best friends, and the tension between Kristy and Dawn (the two best friends in question) comes up throughout the series. Which is one of the more believable things to me, actually; Kristy is the One in Charge, the One in Control, of course she'd hate sharing her best friend. However, I'm not sure why the idea of two best friends was supposed to be so shocking, especially when you consider the following.

Members of the BSC with two best friends:

Mary Anne (Kristy and Dawn)
Dawn (Mary Anne and Sunny)
Stacey (Claudia and Laine -- though, eventually she ends the friendship with Laine, and later still she and Claudia have that big fight and their friendship is never the same, either)
Jessi (Mallory and her cousin whose name I can't remember and all my books are packed Keisha?)

Members of the BSC with one best friend:

Kristy (Mary Anne)
Claudia (Stacey)
Mallory (Jessi)

Members of the BSC with no best friends:

Abby

And yet the two best friends thing is so weird when Mary Anne does it?

(Okay, technically I'm leaving out Logan and Shannon here, but they're associate members! Everyone knows they don't count!)

---

I'm working on my femgen story, and I'm really wishing my books weren't packed. I don't remember the end of one of Claire's plotlines. (I'm writing Making Out fic, which would thrill the girl, except she's never around anymore.)

However, I'm enjoying the story.
escritoireazul: (ginger snaps bitten)
Just in case anyone didn't already know this, writing in a new fandom is hard. Multiply that by six new fandoms at once and, well, I kind of feel like drinking a lot, which won't actually help make these stories any good.

I will finish on time and, despite the woe, I am very pleased with the cleverness of me -- I mean, the overall frame.

---

The other night I had a dream that Dawn Schafer and Stacey McGill, from The Baby-Sitters Club, were helping me hunt zombies. It was one of the best dreams I've ever had, and I hope it becomes one of my (many) repeating dreams.

That Stacey is a killer with a shotgun, let me tell you.

"Fans grow up, stay loyal to the Baby-sitters Club".

It's a fun article, and the best part about reading the paper today.

One of my favorite lines: "Whether you're bossy like Kristy, shy like Mary Anne or diabetic like Stacey -- and everyone thought they were diabetic after reading about Stacey -- there's a match for each reader."

So true. Everyone did think they were diabetic because of Stacey.

I also like: [Matt] Zakozek even refers to character Mallory Pike's experience with infectious mononucleosis when discussing his own illness in his sophomore year. "She made it sound like some mysterious 19th-century disease," he said. It turned out not to be so romantic.
escritoireazul: (blue crush giddy)
Fandom things I don't understand and wish to discuss further at a later date:

1) Apparently Tamora Pierce writes nothing but Mary Sues? At least that's what I've seen all over her fandom. I really, really had no idea. Anyone?

2) People really hate Abby and Dawn from the Baby-sitters Club. Why? I don't know, I love them best.

That's it, for now. I'm off to bed. Yuletide is almost done, I just need to do one more edit and then submit it tomorrow.
escritoireazul: (ana-lucia rockstar)
Finally broke into the last two dvds. I had planned to do it this weekend, but stayed far too busy for far too long, between meetings and getting rid of books and gaming all night Saturday night. I continue to love it.

Battlestar Galactica season one continued )

I'm interested in the religious theories about how it is treated in the show; any good essays/thoughts?

I am definitely going to have to buy this show so I can rewatch to my heart's content.

In other news, I did, finally, manage to make it to the gym this morning, and I'm ready to up my weight on a number of moves. I have this problem where I nickle and dime it to death, and I know this, I did it even back when I first started lifting in high school, and I have to stop. I can handle more weight and fewer reps, and work my way back up. It's part of being a perfectionist, I don't like to switch to the higher weight until I am absolutely sure I can do all my sets with full reps, but that's not quite how it works best for my body.

I went to buy black handwraps after work, because I had so much free time. Unfortunately, every place is still out of the black, and I refuse to buy the white, so instead I picked up new trainers, sunglasses, and workout clothes. According to the workout bottoms I just bought, I have dropped three sizes. I still don't see it, but I know I'm down over thirty pounds, so maybe it's true. I don't know. The new clothes are so comfortable, though, and just in time for kickboxing tomorrow night. Plus it was nice to wear the sunglasses out in the late afternoon sun; I really need them this morning after the gym, as I drove into the sunrise to go home to shower. Painful.

I think I need a new PS2. I've had this one (or should I say J. has had this one) since they first came out, and it's starting to mess up on tonight's BSG dvd. Of course, it could just be because it's a Netflix dvd, but it messed up on the last disc of BtVS season seven the other day, too. It's starting to get frustrating. In no small part because I'm saving money for Wiscon, the Salt Lake holiday, and the new place this summer, so I don't want to have to buy a new PS2. I just went and checked the disc, and it is pretty scratched, so maybe that's it.

It's almost bedtime anyway. I want to go back to the gym in the morning, to get lower body lifting done, because after kickboxing I'm too exhausted to do anything else. In a good way, but still. Time to up the weight on the leg work, too, and tomorrow I want to add in some deadlifts, which I've never done before. This morning the gym was just as crowded at 5:30 a.m. as it is at 5:30 p.m., except in the morning the crowds were on the cardio machines and in the afternoon there are a bunch of guys hogging the weights. (The wrestlers from the high school, mostly, I think.) It was easy to get the bench this morning, and tomorrow I shouldn't have any trouble getting the squat wrack. Good times.

I read the BSC Friends Forever Super Special today, Everything Changes or something like that, and I was hit with the need to write Kristy/Abby.

Everything Changes )

I still need a Starbuck icon. Hmmmm.
escritoireazul: (michelle rodriguez beautiful strength)
Woo. Battlestar Galactica season one disc one and two arrived from Netflix. I'm on 1.02 right now, and still enjoying it very much, the sketchy morality (purposeful, but interesting), the fear, the characters. I am absolutely in love with Starbuck, still. Also the quote about never lending books, that made me happy. I am going to have to buy this show, because I want to watch it a lot, and try to understand it more. I don't think I'll want to write fic for it, but maybe. I have a hard time writing in sci-fi worlds, because I don't read a lot of sci-fi (or watch, for that matter), but the characters may overwhelm that for me.

Earlier, when lounging in bed and enjoying a day with no plans, the first in ages, I read a Baby-Sitter's Club book, Claudia and the Bad Joke (or something like that), and, well, I have femslashy thoughts, enough I might have to write a story.

Can this really be a spoiler? )

Was social again last night, first with some of my coworkers and then with my sister K., one of my coworkers, and a friend of his from out of town and then with my sister visit brother T.'s house (even though he wasn't there, J., his girlfriend, was, and we had a good political discussion). This socialness included me drinking almost twelve bottles of Corona, which kind of made up for the dearth of beer in my life recently, but which is also kind of ridiculous. It was spread out over approximately nine hours or so, but still. K. and I also watched The Lords of Dogtown (again), which continues to make me love it and want to run away to California in a van. Good times.

I love Starbuck so, so, so much. So much. I need icons, Starbuck and BSG.

From [livejournal.com profile] _elektra.

[livejournal.com profile] cabellicious, have you seen this post about homosexuality in the BSC books? It's actually frustrating in a way, at least the original post, but some of the comments are very interesting.

One in particular caught my eye, about Ann M Martin herself being gay. No idea if that is true or not.

I just thought you might find it interesting. I had no idea the community even existed.

I recced "Jubilee and the Fifty-Foot Janine" here, when [livejournal.com profile] _elektra mentioned she wanted to read BSC fic now. And now I have my own desire to read and maybe write some. Gah.

I've spent two and a half hours flitting around lj instead of working on the things on my To Do list. This is bad. I need to stay away from fandom more, I think.
