[anniversary] a decade of Carla fic

I just realized that it has been ten years since I started posting fanfic online. Ten years this month, I think, but I don't remember exactly when I started posting Forever. TEN YEARS. I was such a kid back then, so freaking young. Most of my friends in fandom were at least ten years older than me, and I loved it. I'm the woman I am now because of the people I met back in early Buffy fandom (I joined online fandom awhile before I started writing fic), with whom I still keep in casual contact. I've met some of the most important people in my life because of writing fanfic.
Ten years.
Happy decade of fic to me!
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
"Forever Ain't All It's Cracked Up To Be" was my first fic posted online. It definitely shows some of the things I still like to do, but frequently do in non-fanfic writing instead of fanfic these days: create original characters - especially strong female characters, write epic stories (Forever is almost 42,000 words), write about demons, and have apocalyptic battles. It's an alternate universe set during Buffy season three, and it's horrible. I've considered taking it down a hundred times, but leave it there for reasons I can't quite articulate. It got a ton of feedback, and I won an award for best original character which filled me with glee.
I wrote some little stories during this time period, too, as well as "The Vampire's Witch Princess Bride". I stopped writing around the end of season four or so, and stopped participating in fandom outside of ThatHappyPlace shortly after. I came back into the fandom after it was done, around the same time I met
nikitangel online.
The Lost Boys
From Buffy, I moved on to TLB fandom. It was a huge shock; even back then, Buffy was a big fandom, and TLB is still pretty tiny, even with a second movie. There wasn't a lot of fic back when I started writing, but that changed. The mailing list was phenomenal, and I'm still very close friends with some of the people I met because of TLB fic.
I still call this my main fandom if asked, and I'm still writing in it. My big TLB work was The Protector Series.
"Second Chances" is the first story in the PS, and it's total crap, but people love it. I love the series as a whole, but some of the writing is so bad I cringe. Again, I've considered taking it down, but leave it because it's part of the series. It took me years to finish this series, and I still miss writing it. This is where you can really see my love of ending the world, and writing strong female characters. TLB was a big change for me, too, because there weren't that many female characters, especially women with agency and depth.
TLB is the fandom where many of the stories I loved have been removed from the internet, but you can still find some of them at The Lost Cave.
The Mighty Ducks
TLB brought me
thestalkycop and Sarah brought me to the Ducks. I'd loved the movies for a long time, but she convinced me to write fic. I've never written much here, but one of the things which struck me was that the two fat guys (one Jewish, one black) didn't have stories about them.
So I wrote the On Being series, which starts with "On Being Real". This started my love of writing high school fic, and even high school romances, which has left fanfic and moved on to non-fanfic writing.
X-Men
I met
crimson_keys because of TLB, and I first read fic by
musesfool on Keya's multi-fandom mailing list. I followed her into X-Men fic. (Well, she was already writing it, but I was eager to read more of her work.)
I started in X-Men fic with X-Men Movieverse, but have written a little bit of comic fic, too.
"Rogue Always Did Like to Make Lists" was my first, and it's very clear that I came into XMM as a Rogue/Wolverine shipper when I was just reading it (to me, it really echoes the Willow/Angel shippiness of when I joined Buffy fandom online). I've been a fan of the comics for most of my life, but the movies inspire me to write. Maybe because the canon is easier for them. I really love some of the stories I've written, and writing them made me quite fond of Pyro's character.
Harry Potter
I followed
musesfool into Harry Potter, too, because I loved Remus and Sirius in the books, and that's what she was writing. I still love some of her R/S stories. I didn't write much myself, but I did do some remixes in this fandom which I love.
"oh, the bleakness of the moon (the waning, waxing remix)" was the first I wrote, I think.
The Fast and the Furious
I loved this movie from the moment I saw it in theaters; I was prepared to love it from the moment I saw the first preview. I love Vin Diesel; I watch some cheesy, crappy movies for him, and enjoy the hell out of them. FatF is different; I really, truly love the movie for itself. Part of it is that it reminds me of Point Break, which I love. Part of it is the cast, most of whom make me happy. (Paul Walker, not so much.) Part of it is my love for mechanics and street racing and engines and made families and loyalty and - well, I could go on and on. This is where I fell in love with Michelle Rodriguez, too.
I started with a Letty fic, which is fitting. "always she is dominant" is a post-movie story which explores how Letty deals with all the shit. It turned into a series (something else I tend to do when writing), and after that I branched out into writing Letty/Mia, too. I have a manifesto. (Also, I really think FatF parallels TLB a lot.)
This kind of marked the end of me being fandom monogamous (and I wasn't very good at it anyway), and I just keep adding more and more and more, usually one or two stories, usually crossovers, so I'll stop now.
I write a lot of girl slash, and a lot of apocalyptic stories, and a lot of crossovers. You can find my fic tagged here, or most of it at my website, Escritoire Azul.
According to the counter there, and it doesn't have everything, I've posted 138 stories which total over half a million words. I have a ton of in progress fic, too, some of which will never see the light of day, some I hope to finish eventually.
They break down into these fandoms, in the order I started writing them:
Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel - 46
The Lost Boys - 20
The Mighty Ducks - 6
X-Men - 10
Harry Potter - 7
The Fast and the Furious - 11

Bend It Like Beckham - 2
Lost - 2
Firefly/Serenity - 3
