I am nominating this for Yuletide, and I need help with one of the character names. The redhead is Megan, but the French brunette is whoever signed this letter (I think I've got the link where it should open right on the letter). There is an S at the beginning and maybe a z in there. Can anyone else actually read it?

Also: I love this fucking ad so damn much.

ETA: Many thanks to [personal profile] raine for finding the names! And to [personal profile] raine and [personal profile] paperscribe for pointing out the redhead is Gemma. Which I knew, and is what I meant to say, and I have no idea where Megan came from. I wasn't even listening to anything with the name Megan in it!

Anyway, Gemma and Sieza are headed to Yuletide!

[tumblr.com profile] natasharomanoffburnbook, one of my ride or dies, is raising funds to help a beloved family member get out of a terrible marriage. She explains more of the details here.

The Faith Freedom Fund: Helping a good woman and her children get away from a bad situation. This Tumblr link has fundraising offers from people, e.g., icons, drabbles, art, etc. for donations.

Here is the GoFundMe link for direct donations.

Here is my addition: If you make a donation and send a copy of the receipt (personal details redacted) to [email protected] along with some details about what you want, I will write you something of at least 500 words. Fic? Snarky recap? Lyrical poem? Reviews of your favorite horror movies? I'm game. (There are some things I may not be able to do, but I will work with you on that.)

You can find my fic on Archive of Our Own. Snarky recaps at Devil's Elbow (Point Horror and other 80s and 90s teen genre fiction) and Sweet Valley Online (Sweet Valley, starting with Twins). Depending on how you combine a couple, I've written in 76 fandoms (you can find the list on my profile), and I have frequently picked up fandoms specifically to write someone a story.

Pieces will be done within the next 12 months, and I hope sooner, but that depends on how many requests come in. Comments are screened on this post in case people want to say something privately, so let me know if you comment and it can be made public. Default will be not to make anything public.

Fandom and fandom people have helped me in so many ways over the years. I hope to give a little of it back here.

I know a bunch of you love Check Please!, and maybe you can help. Is Samwell based on a real school? If not, what real school would you use as a reference for fic you may or may not ever actually write? Also, do any of you have any favorite resources for Check Please! writing purposes?

Copying this from [personal profile] ithiliana (original here):

Robin Wayne Bailey is making an appeal on Facebook to save a vast archive of material that belonged to the late Suzette Haden Elgin.

From his post:

An antique dealer in Arkansas who purchases abandoned storage lockers for his business recently acquired one that contained all the papers, books and original artwork of Suzette Haden Elgin.

Suzette was much loved throughout Midwest and southern fandom and seen at many conventions during the eighties and nineties. A linguist, she retired from the University of San Diego and resettled in the Ozarks. She founded the Science Fiction Poetry Society and the Ozarks Center for Science Fiction. For a list of her many books, check Wikipedia (I’m writing this on an iPhone). The antique dealer contacted LOCUS, who then contacted me. I verified with Suzette’s husband that he had no room for what reportedly are “hundreds” of boxes. If any fan group is interested in rescuing any of this material, I’ll pass along the antique dealer’s contact info. I hope someone can save it. Please share this across all fannish channels.

You can reach Bailey with a Facebook message.

I'm notifying all the archivists I know who work with sff collections, both on Facebook and private email, but I wanted to post here, and encourage people to circulate as widely as possible.

If you're not on Facebook, you can see the information at File 770.

Suzette was amazing. As a linguist and SFF writer, but also as a person. I did not know her well (I met her one year at Wiscon, and had a few exchanges with her thanks to livejournal about language and how to handle slowly watching a parent die), and still, she was unbelievable and kind to me. I hope a group can rescue this material. I wish I had the funds to do so myself, and then donate it somewhere.

Looks like a friend of mine is moving to NYC in the near future, and I would like to put her in touch with awesome NYC fannish people, if any of you don't mind. Leave me a comment if so.

(Actually, multiple friends of mine are moving to NYC in the near future. Maybe I should take this as a suggestion of where to live.)

As often happens anymore, I am behind most of fandom. For a long time, I was holding off on reading the Hunger Games trilogy because I wanted to watch the movies first. (I tend to enjoy movies better if I see them before I read the book.) And I did watch the first movie, and I enjoyed it. Then someone recommended to fics to me: There's Another River on the Other Side and How Rue Became the Mockingjay, both about Rue and Thresh being the ones who survive, and I was hooked. I bought the trilogy with the intent to read only the first one, and then ended up reading all three in one night.

What I really, really want are more stories about Rue and Thresh surviving. Anyone have any recs?

This post sparked by the fact I'm watching Hunger Games tonight in preparation for finally watching Catching Fire Friday night after work. My dvd order came in, but I don't have time to watch until Friday. Looking forward to it!

One final thing: anyone talking about the Veronica Mars movie? I saw it last Friday, and plan to watch it again this weekend (I was a Kickstarter backer, so I have a digital download), and I came late to the tv show, so I'd love to see meta and discussions and squee and rage, if they're happening.

I have some long trips coming up soon, and I was thinking about how to entertain myself. Normally I listen to music and/or work, but listening to some stories sounds like an excellent plan.

Do you guys have favorite podfics? I'd love recs. I'm pretty multifannish, so anything goes, really, but in particular I'd love long stories about women, werewolves, dancers, Darcy being awesome in the Avengers-verse (preferably with no Loki), intriguing mysteries, road trip stories, case fic -- actually, you know, recs for fic or e-books would be good too. No ereader currently, but I can add them to my phone.
